Engine Tuning

Part 5 - Starting to get MATURE???

28th September June 2003

Disclaimer : - for stock EFI system, actually there is no such thing as "tuning".

Over 3 months have passed since the last so called "Engine Tuning" update. Many things have happen. Many mistakes discovered. Many new findings found. Many new ideas tried out. There are so much that no proper record was made. This is very regretful, but a serious attempt will be made here to inform the readers as best possible.

So, this should actually be Part 10 or so??? That's how much have gone through.

Some of the progress / learning may be found in: -

  1. Fuel Pressure Gauge

  2. Alternator Died

  3. Rear Brakes Efficiency

  4. Toyota 20v AFM Silvertop ECU's pin out

  5. Engine Tilting

There should be more actually :(

Recently the suspension has been upgraded. :) The upgrade is very successful, see Suspension by TiTAN where the car sticks to the group much better and hence experience much less power lost to the ground from bouncing suspensions. this causes the feel of engine power some what lacking and more fiddling is made to get more power :)

Much messing as usual this and that. Thanks to the installation of the Fuel Pressure Gauge the fuel is set according to the manual + higher by 2 psi. However there is vibration reading in the gauge and it is believed to be a faulty Upgrade Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Since there is a spare OEM fuel pressure regulator, it is installed to double check the Fuel Pressure Gauge's consistency.

Well what do you know? Both are exactly the same in reading and behaviour except for the +2 psi extra we purposely add in. So the original is used now.

With this the engine is not.....smooth / optimum. Since the 4AG 20Valve Engine Repair Manual is never wrong and that the OEM fuel pressure regulator is working 100% on mark. Therefore something else must be wrong......but what???

Out of ideas, out of mits, many old issues crisscrossing the mind, many many many. Finally - what the heck try this: -

  1. Distributor timing increase from 9 degrees to 11 degrees

  2. AFM Flap's tension increase 4 notch from fuel pump engage pin start

  3. AFM By-pass valve closed

  4. 4 throttle's vacuum synchronisation messing :)

  5. Air-cond vacuum compensator messing :)

  6. Done

Guess what?

It actually works. Power increased, 90% is due to distributor timing. There is very little pinging now. Acceptable level.

Engine sound / tone is different and better, a little quieter. Come to think of it the whole mess was simply not setting the TPS correctly, which cause DMT Racing Development to mess with the AFM, then the Dyno Day results showing the air fuel ratio too rich. This two thing made the journey of learning and discovering so longggggg and farrrrrrrrrrr. Thank goodness something has been learned or else it would be very disappointing.

Much improvement is needed......time will allow it to happen. By god's willing.
