Engine Tuning

Part 11 - Finally Matured

14 March 2004

Like before, many months have passed. Many new findings. Many mistakes found and corrected. Just to list a few of the most important ones.

The exhaust oxygen sensor was found to be not working properly. It's output to the ECU should be oscillating below 0.4V and above 0.55V. This is according to www.autoshop101.com and that the oscillation frequency is 8 times or more in 10 seconds.

Mine is just 0.3 constant :(

I've got a spare one and finally after so long, found the time and motivation to change it. After changing it the sensor needs to be hot in order to feedback properly. According to www.autoshop101.com it needs to be at 600 Celsius. So the car is driven out and driven hard for 10 times and quickly return home. Take out the digital multi meter and quickly stick it into the diagnosis plug pin named OX.

And it reads 0.3xxV then 0.8xxV then 0.3xxV then 0.8xxV then 0.3xxV then 0.8xxV then 0.3xxV then 0.8xxV then - Wow, wu-who it's working properly :)

Then the air flow meter's by-pass valve is open up very high, in hope to make the engine lean, because it is believed to be a little rich. Once that is done the engine sound completely changed. I do not know whether it is good or not, but let it be and we'll find out later. Too early to make any conclusion.

Drive out, something is not right. The car feels more grippy on the roads. Corners can be taken at higher speed without fear. This is good :)

Two weeks passed. Still good. :)

Then the charcoal filter finally installed correctly and the vacuum lines all route correctly. Please see: -

All is good now. Really really OEM :)

self thinking - perhaps self-compensating ECU is not good. It compensates too much and changes behavior too slowly to be of any immediate use :(
