Limited Slip Differential (LSD) from Toyota Corolla AE86 Levin / Trueno T285 Rear Axle

16th December 2003

The T50 gearbox has just been changed and some gear meshing noise is heard and was put up for complaint :) hehe. However the seller (mechanic) and other mechanics can't hear it, everyone complain about the axle noise instead.

So, the seller volunteer to swap his final differential for trial runs in hope to be quieter hence able to hear the gearbox noise. The non LSD final differential is suspected from U312.

The calipers and rotors are removed, then the 4 bolts holding the bearing retainer and whatever inside released. A custom made catapult is installed onto the axle shaft and the weight is pushed outwards to remove the drive shaft.

slowly coming out

finally out, so is the very tight fitting bearing.

On basic inspection looks very clean, neat. Must be the oil change too regular. No specific wear or tear. However I'm no expert, so can't find any problems.

non LSD above vs below TRD 2-way LSD 4-pinions differential

after minor wiping / cleaning

Drive Shaft Gear teeth = 23 teeth

Drive Shaft Gear diameter = 24.xx mm, so this is a zenki axle pre 1985 model

Upon trial, it was found that the non LSD differential is not compatible with this rear axle configurations. There is significant slipping where metal knocking sound is heard, kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg kiiinnngggg  wah, my heart is going to fall out :(

So, change back. This is unfortunate, because of lost of labor time, although it is FOC.

Also the LSD and the differential cannot be sent for overhaul :(

It was just learnt that drive-shaft used for LSD differential are shorter than non LSD differential. Hence this shorter drive shaft cannot reach deep enough into the differential housing and cannot catch the gears to spin properly. That's why it slipped.

Drive shaft from non LSD differential are longer due to smaller pinion housing. They can be modified to include a LSD. All it is needed is to cut the drive shaft shorter and file the edge off nicely.
