Rebuilt OEM Limited Slip Differential (LSD) from Toyota Corolla AE86 Levin / Trueno

17th June 2003

It is advised to replace the Clutch Plates after ............ (Oooooppppppsssss, the manual didn't say to replace it after how many km travel :)  ) Well after so long, more than 15 years, it's definitely due. :)

The followings are for car owners using Toyota Corolla AE86 Levin / Trueno rear axle that came with factory default LSD with a final differential ratio of 4.1 for T-285 rear axle or 4.3 for T-283 rear axle. Well, the actual real criteria is the Ring gear is 6.7 inch in diameter.

Summary: -

T282 = 4.3 final differential ratio without LSD

T283 = 4.3 final differential ratio with LSD

T284 = 4.1 final differential ratio without LSD

T285 = 4.1 final differential ratio with LSD

Original parts number / source / information obtained from a forum member nicked Drift4fun form Club 4AG Technical Talk Forum who is an Engineer. Therefore many thanks goes to Drift4fun. He may be contacted by clicking on his nick in the forum. Later on the source thread was deleted. Don't know why?

The parts number was collected and sent to UMW Toyota Malaysia for ordering. However since these parts came from a model (AE86), which was not originally available in Malaysia, therefore it is not registered in the spare parts ordering database.

After around 2 weeks of telephone calls & emails exchange with UMW Toyota Malaysia, the parts no. are finally registered into the ordering database. Still parts will have to wait 1.5 months to arrive from Japan, while an extra 25% surcharge will get it here in 2 weeks time. Finally a 30% deposit required for ordering.

For this, thanks goes to the following people for helping the entire process: -

Edmond Lim (Mr.) (Manager - Customer Relations Division)

Mr. Ramesh Kumar (Executive - Customer Relations Division)

They may be reached on 1-800 33 8888 (I think) or was it 1-800-33-1111 (can't remember) :)

and finally Amir (Mr.), the person himself when you want to order them and rebuilt the LSD, so please contact: -

The AE86's Manual should be obtained before proceeding to rebuilt it. Or download it from : - AE86 Manual - Rear Axle

See pages RA-25 to 31 (only 6 pages, so it's going to be a easy job :)   - noooo, dream-on)

Another issue is the "Clutch Member Brass Washers", but it is stated as "Clutch Member Thrust Washers" in the manual. Hmmmmmmmmmmm, but we don't want to confuse the spare part shop personnel, so "Clutch Member Brass Washers" it is.

Finally Drift4fun also mentioned that the Adjusting Washer (items 5 to 10) needs to be changed. There are 2 pieces, one of each end of the axle. But they come in varying thickness. The correct thickness is required to achieve optimum LSD torque / action.

According to another friend ( Mr. CHUA Chen Ming Machine Shop Machinist - who makes mould) help read the manual and explain the mechanicals, which said, that in order to achieve optimum LSD torque, one should use the thinnest Adjusting Washer to test, then change to a thicker one, until the LSD starts to re-act, and finally move back down one thickness. Something like this.........

Or, one should buy the thickest Adjusting Washer, then skim it down to the correct thickness. So, it's your call now.

Since most people wants heavy / higher LSD torque reaction, hence it is adviced to buy the thickest Adjusting Washer. When new it would have higher LSD torque performance versus setup from stock recommendation. Since the Clutch Plates will wear and tear the LSD torque performance will reduce over time and new plates will be required again.
