T50 gearbox from Corona for AE86

18th December 2003

1st Oil Change since 9th December 2003

There are some noises since the 1st day of gearbox change. The noise was previously not heard of from the old gearbox. The noise sounds like gears meshing, or bearings grinding on the surface???

This is especially prominent above 5,000 rpm on all gears, except 4th have always slightly less of everything. This is because 4th gear is a direct crank-shaft output to propeller-shaft.

The engine oil Shell Helix Fully Synthetic 15w-50 is also one of the suspect, because the engine sounds more and more noisy each day. The engine feels slightly sluggish, the engine roaring sound is rough and not singing etc etc etc. Engine oil change is called for soon too. The fuel consumption also dropped drasically from 40 liters for 400km become 40 liters for 300km :(

It was thought that this gearbox contain old and dead oil so a oil change is planned soon. The oil from the old gearbox is elf 140 with bardahl gear oil additive + stop leak. Although there was many tiny metal debris, but it is reused on the 9th. This is to save cost, as this gearbox will see oil change very often from now on, until it is clean inside.

So, when the oil is removed, it looks like: -

It is only 1 liter + a bit. Where did the other 0.7 go???

The color is somewhat distorted. From human's naked eye it should look more dark, near black or extremely brownie, near black. There was also the elements of dusty feel.

Test Drive

The gear shift is as hard as before the oil change. The previous gear box is smoother than this one :( there are still noises.

The new oil for flushing purposes will be used for around 1,000 km. It is lubrimaxx SAE 90 API GL-4 with Extreme Pressure Additives. Mineral Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 22 for 4 liters. Effective 2+ oil change.

Lets see what happens later.
