Looking at this comparison, one start to understand why the mid low-pass so late because the tweeter cannot start as low.
The -3dB cross-over point / gap is just nice for this case.
However letting the mid play cone breakup frequencies suffers harshness feeling to the listener. The overall sound level is plentiful and seems to come from the mid, which is normally mounted on the door and ultimately causing the sound stage to be low.
