Full Digital Path Audio

2nd August 2016

Objective of this write up is not to provide a singular straight-forward best answer.

First it shows the use of known good rules/solution/setup (proven from textbooks), but to more importantly demonstrate which/when/how to use what investigative method to achieve a proper good setup. (It's more of a diary for myself)

Finally without the break and fail due to disobeying the fundamental laws of physics (in this case mostly acoustics) and not forgetting standard rules of practice in basic attention to electronics, etc.

Consider this a super quick demonstration, can't even label this a short cut nor qualify as a crash course, because if you know you know. Else a lot of text book foundations required to explain the things done and unfortunately is out of this scope.

A full digital path audio solution was sought after, to be honest I didn't even know if such things existed. Putting my faith on that smart phones are more powerful than 8086 from the 80s, I hope what I dream for / wish for from >10 years ago would be available today for reasonable costs, just as computer hardware have grown. With a purpose to cut away DAC. To my surprised they are available at ultra low cost, which produced extremely high cost performance ratio.

The nanoDIGI_2x8-B (US$175) coaxial digital in with 4 digital output was eventually found and bought.

While three direct digital amplifiers were also found. Times sure have changed..... I choose three completely different model on purpose, in hope there's such a thing as mix and match, else where's the fun?

Namely TAS5614 and STA326 amplifier IC solution.

  1. Currently woofer powered by the largest D.Sound D310 (US$180)
  2. Midrange pushed by V110 (US$100)
  3. finally tweeter carried by D802 (US$80)

All together.... crazy cheap, but high tech, may be even latest tech???

They have been swapped over before, no difference heard, although the D.Sound D310 seems to be easily intruded by noise from other electrical appliances, this was unfortunate.

Both the V110 and D802 were powered individually by a LPS and PWM respectively and swapped over, no difference heard. That's expected, when fundamental are implemented and executed properly, no anomalies should be heard. Electronics are after all detailed and accurate down to 0.01dB. Now both amplifier's powered by single LPS. Oh yes the nanoDIGI is also powered by the same LPS's USB 5V out. 1 PSU for 3 items, efficient.

A lot more will be coming, stay tuned.
